Are you a fan of the police uniform? Is it your desire to work for the Indian Police Service (IPS)? How do you go about becoming an IPS officer?
Millions of people in the country aspire to be IPS officers.
What are the IPS eligibility requirements and medical requirements? We’ll see in this article.
The full form of IPS is the Indian Police Service.
Officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) offer top leadership to police forces across the country, both at the state and national levels.
During British control in India, the Indian Police Service may be traced back to the Indian (Imperial) Police. The Indian (Imperial) Police was superseded by the Indian Police Service in 1948, a year after India gained independence from Britain.
After the Indian Constitution was created in 1950, the Indian Police Service (IPS) was established as one of the three All India Services under Article 312 of the Constitution of India (AIS). Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Forest Service are the other two All India Services (AIS) (IFS).
To join the Indian Police Service (IPS), you must pass the Union Public Service Commission’s (UPSC) Civil Services Exam (CSE) with flying colours.
The UPSC conducts the Civil Service Exam (CSE) to select candidates for various services including as IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and others.
Prelims, Mains, and Interview are the three stages of the Civil Services Exam. After the UPSC interview, there will be a medical test the next day.
Please find the seven steps we recommend for UPSC Services Exam candidates below. You will receive extensive guidance and personal mentorship throughout all aspects of UPSC preparation once you enrol in the ClearIAS Online Classroom Program (ClearIAS Classes).
UPSC CSE is open to candidates between the ages of 21 and 32. The age limit for OBC, SC, and ST applicants has been relaxed. To take the Civil Services Exam, you only need to be a graduate. More information about the Civil Services Exam eligibility criteria can be found here.
The Indian Police Service is a technical service, and candidates who do not satisfy the minimum height and chest girth requirements would be rejected.
Minimum Height Required for Male Candidates: 165 cm
Minimum Height Requirement for Female Candidates: 150 cm
However ST candidates have a relaxation of 5 cm, hence the requirement is only 160 centimetres for ST male candidates and 145 centimetres of ST female candidates. Relaxed minimum height is prescribed not only for candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes but also to races such as Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Assamese, Kumaonis, and Nagaland Tribal etc. whose average height is distinctly lower
Chest girth when fully expanded for male candidates: 84 cm
Chest girth when fully expanded for female candidates: 79 cm.
Candidates should also be able to expand chest size by 5 cm.
Distance Vision: The corrected vision for the better eye should be 6/6 or 6/9. The corrected vision for the poorer eye should be 6/12 or 6/9.
Near Vision: The corrected vision for the better eye should be J1**. The corrected vision for the poorer eye should be J2**.
Corrections like as spectacles, CL, and refractive surgery such as Lasik, ICL, IOL, and others are allowed. If refractive surgery was performed, however, the case was sent to a Special Board of Ophthalmologists.
There is no restriction on the number of refractive errors that can be made. Candidates with myopia greater than 6.00 D, as well as spherical and cylindrical errors, should be submitted to a special Myopia Board.
If you have a squint, you will be judged unfit for IPS. To be medically fit for IPS, you must also have binocular vision and high-grade colour vision.
The Indian Police Service Officers have a total authorised strength of only 4802. Many positions remain empty among the permitted strength.
This implies that if you join the Indian Police Service, you will be in a position that is unrivalled. You’ll join a high leadership group with the ability to command a variety of police forces.
There are three ways to join the Indian Police Service at the moment. The following are some of them:
As you may be aware, a few state police officers will be promoted to the rank of IPS. However, obtaining IPS via this approach necessitates extensive experience and a strong track record. Direct recruits, on the other hand, can earn an IPS at a young age if they pass the UPSC Civil Services Exam.
The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the Union Public Service Commission’s most popular tests. This exam is held by UPSC to recruit candidates for roughly 24 top government jobs, including IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and others.
The UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) is divided into three stages. The stages are as follows:
The exam period lasts about 10-12 months (usually from June month of a year to June month next year when the results are announced).
All Indian Police Service officers go through probationary training at Mussoorie’s Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration and Hyderabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy. Officers are confirmed in the military after successfully completing probation.
There is also a requirement for Indian Police Service officers to complete required Mid-Career Training over the course of their careers.
The Police Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is in charge of the Indian Police Service’s cadre management and policy decisions, including cadre structure, recruiting, training, cadre allocation, confirmation, empanelment, deputation, pay and allowances, and disciplinary procedures. The Service is divided into 26 State cadres, which are evaluated every five years.
An IPS official’s remuneration is nearly identical to that of an IAS officer, with just slight changes.
The lowest-ranking IPS officer (ASP rank) is paid Rs.56100, while the highest-ranking officer (DGP) is paid Rs.2,25,000. In addition to the basic wage, allowances such as DA and TA are offered.
Officers in the Indian Police Service are eligible for wage increases and promotions throughout their careers. Promotions are made after an evaluation of the officer’s performance based on Annual Performance Appraisal Reports, Vigilance Clearance, and a review of the officer’s overall record.
Officers from the Indian Police Service can work in a variety of roles for autonomous organisations, subordinate organisations, public sector undertakings, UN agencies, and international organisations.
They might also work as personal secretaries for central government ministers.
The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), which include the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Security Guard (NSG), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Vigilance Organisations, and Indian Federal Law Enforcement Agencies, are led and commanded by IPS officers.
Officers of the Indian Police Service also command and head Indian intelligence agencies such as the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), among others.
