Indian Railways is the world’s fourth largest railway network and the country’s largest employer, employing over 14 lakh people. What is the procedure for selecting candidates?
The Railway Recruitment Board advertises job openings in the newspaper ‘Employment News’ (Government of India). Furthermore, job announcements are posted on the Internet at regular intervals. The board’s officials examine the applications for eligibility. Following the process, candidates will receive exam letters inviting them to take a written examination. These call letters are given out a month before the examination date.
After the written examination, no interviews are done in many categories. There will be a second stage written test in a few categories. When the categories are connected to operational safety, a psychological exam may be done.
What criteria are used to evaluate applications?
The first step in the process is to double-check the information provided in the application. Candidates are required to attend counselling and have their original documents examined. For the vacancy, a list of candidates is sent to the Railway Department. Medical examinations are undertaken in the second half, and candidates must pass the examination to be considered for an appointment.
The selection process is entirely merit-based. The Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) of the Government of India issues rules and regulations that govern the recruitment process. According to the guidelines, certain castes/communities, such as Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and ex-servicemen, are given preference for jobs.
The entire recruitment process is automated, and the results are impersonal. Candidates are free to take the tests without fear of discrimination. In this method, there is no room for corruption, influence, or discretion. Those who engage in unethical actions or use unfair means are dealt with harshly.
What are the categories of Railway Recruitment?
Recruitments are followed in four categories, Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D.
Group A: Civil service and combined engineering service examinations are used to select candidates for the Group A category. Every year, the Union Public Service Commission administers these tests (UPSC). Candidates that are hired in this category begin their careers as Assistant Commercial Managers or Assistant Engineers. They are eventually promoted to Divisional Commercial Manager, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Chief Commercial Manager, Divisional Railway Manager, Additional General Manager, General Manager, Member (Commercial) of Railway Board, and Chairman of Railway Board.

Group B: consists of the following individuals.
Section Officers, Junior Engineers, and Depot Material Superintendents are among the positions available to those hired under this category. While some positions are filled through the Civil Service test, others are filled through promotion of workers from Group C.

This category is filled through the 17 Railway Recruitment Boards located throughout the country.
