All About UPSC Exam Information

The union government administers the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam. It is also known as the most important exam for getting a job in the government. This commission fills all of the class 1 and class 2 officer positions.

Many of us had heard of this exam, but only a few of us were familiar with it. In this article, we will go over every facet of the exam. The following points will be discussed in this points:

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

Nationality

1. For the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service, a candidate must be a citizen of India.
2. For other services, a candidate must be either

a citizen of India, or
a subject of Nepal, or
a subject of Bhutan, or
a Tibetan refugee who came over to

3. ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS

Minimum Educational Qualifications : The candidate must hold a degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.

NOTE :
Candidates who have appeared at an examination the passing of which would render them educationally qualified for the Commission’s examination but have not been informed of the results as also the candidates who intend to appear at such a qualifying examination will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination. All candidates who are declared qualified by the Commission for taking the Civil Services (Main) Examination will be required to produce proof of passing the requisite examination with their application for the Main Examination failing which such candidates will not be admitted to the Main Examination. The applications for the Main Examination will be called sometime in the month of July/August,

1) Age Limits – A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years .
2) The upper age limit prescribed above will be relatable :

• Up to a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.
• Up to a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
• Up to a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989.
• Up to a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof.

PLAN OF EXAMINATION

The Civil Services Examination will consist of two successive stages (vide Appendix I Section-I below).

1. Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objective type) for the selection of candidates for the Main Examination; and
2. Civil Services Main Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various Services and posts.
3. The Preliminary Examination will consist of two papers of Objective type (multiple choice questions) and carry a maximum of 400 marks in the subjects. This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only; the marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit. The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Examination will be about twelve to thirteen times the total approximate number of vacancies to be filled in the year in the various Services and Posts. Only those candidates who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary Examination in the year will be eligible for admission to the Main Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Main Examination.

Scheme and subjects for the Preliminary :-
A. Preliminary Examination The Examination shall comprise two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.

NOTE :

1. Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions).
2. The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. However, questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level will be tested through passages from English Language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.
3. Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates will however, be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes at each paper.

General Studies Paper 1 (200 marks) – Duration : Two hrs.

• Current events of national and international importance
• History of India and Indian national movement
• Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world
• Indian Polity and governance – constitution,political system panchayati raj,public policy,Rights issues,etc.
• Economic and social development – sustainable development,poverty,inclusion,demographics,social sector initiatives etc.
• General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that do not require subject specialization
• General science.

General Studies Paper II (200 marks) – Duration : Two hrs.

• Comprehension
• Interpersonal skills including communication skills
• Logical reasoning and analytical ability
• Decision making and problem solving
• General mental ability
• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level)
• English language comprehension skills (Class X level)
